After a strong rally of five sessions, the longest since September for Bitcoin (BTC), cryptocurrency markets have retraced somewhat on Tuesday. After rising nearly 20% over a five day stretch to a high near $45,000 on Monday, Bitcoin retraced to lose 2.2% on Tuesday. Number two cryptocurrency Ethereum (ETH) performed worse, falling 3.8% but still remaining above the key $3,000 level.
The worst performing cryptocurrency in the top ten was Solana (SOL), with a drop of 7.7% as investors remain wary over the eighth largest cryptocurrency by market cap in light of recent security flaws found in its code. Also posting a significant drop was the Binance Coin (BNB), the utility token for the Binance exchange. BNB was down 6.5% on the day, holding just slightly above the key $400 level.
Rounding out the top ten, Polkadot (DOT) fell 5.4% and Terra (LUNA) dropped 3.5%, while Ripple (XRP) bucked the falling trend by extending its recent gains by another 3%. By far the best performing cryptocurrency of the day in the top 100 was UNUS SED LEO (LEO), which was ironic since it was the only token in the top 100 to post a loss yesterday. That said, it more than made up for those small losses as it rocketed higher by 48.7% on Tuesday. The surge came as the U.S. Department of Justice announced it has recovered $3.6 billion of the $4.5 billion Bitcoin stolen in a 2016 hack of Bitfinex. The LEO tokens were issued by Bitfinex to help the exchange beef up its coffers following the hack and other misfortunes.
